The D.I.S.H. Foundation, located in Bellingham, WA, creates meaningful vocational training opportunities in the culinary industry for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Our mission is grounded in Dignity, Independence, Sense of purpose, and Hope — the four pillars that define DISH: To employ persons with intellectual & developmental disabilities (IDD). We believe that every person deserves a chance to grow, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to their community.

Each year, we train an average of 15 participants in kitchen and restaurant fundamentals, food safety, culinary vocabulary, cooking techniques, and the safe use of small appliances. Participants also gain foundational financial literacy and customer service skills, helping them become more confident and independent inside and outside of the kitchen.

The program is income-based and self-certifying, but our goal is to raise enough support through private donations, in-kind contributions, fundraising, and grants to make the training completely free for all participants.

Graduates often transition into on-the-job experiences or pursue long-term employment in the culinary field. Many go on to become tax-paying contributors to our local economy, breaking barriers not only for themselves but for our entire community.

Looking forward, we are excited to expand beyond our current location and welcome partnerships with organizations who share our vision and wish to replicate our model in their own communities. Together, we can build a more inclusive workforce and a future full of possibility.
